My Hands Behind Every Session

For most of my life, I disliked my hands. They were never the delicate, elegant hands I imagined an artist should have. I noticed every imperfection and wished they looked different. But over time, something changed.

I began to realize that these same hands have spent years creating beauty for other families.

• These hands create.

And these hands help preserve memories that families will treasure for generations.

When people see a finished photograph, they often focus on the baby.

They see the beautiful floral setup, the floral handcrafted bonnet, the painted backdrop, the custom headband, the tiny bed, the basket, the cake, or even the little airplane prop.

What they do not always see is what happened before the camera ever clicked. Many of those pieces were created by hand by me. I make many of my own floral arrangements. I create delicate bonnets and headbands. I design decorations and character-inspired props. I paint beds, baskets, backdrops, and posing pieces. I build custom airplanes from cardboard.

I decorate cakes and create themed setups that bring a family's vision to life. Every detail begins long before a baby session. It begins with an idea. Then patience. Then creativity. And finally, my hands willing to bring that idea into reality.

Seeing Myself Through a Different Lens

One lesson I learned from my mentor, Sue Bryce, is that we are often our own harshest critics.

For years, I focused on the things I wished were different about myself. The things we dislike are often the very things that make us unique. Sue helped me see myself through a different lens. Instead of noticing imperfections, I began noticing what those same hands had created.

Every memory preserved.

For years, I focused on what my hands looked like.

Today, I focus on what they allow me to create.

When I look at my hands now, I no longer see just my veins or imperfections.
