The Best Cake Smash Photos Aren't Always the Smiling Ones

Updated: Jun 16

One thing I have learned over the years as a photographer is that babies don't always follow the plan. As parents, we spend weeks preparing for a first birthday. We choose the theme, order the cake, pick the perfect outfit, and imagine all the adorable photographs we'll take. Naturally, many parents picture a baby covered in frosting, laughing and happily smashing cake everywhere. And sometimes that's exactly what happens. But sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes babies look at the cake with suspicion. Sometimes they refuse to touch it. Sometimes they cry. Sometimes they become overwhelmed by all the excitement of balloons, decorations, cameras, and everyone watching them. And do you know what?

That's perfectly okay.

Every Baby Is Different

One of the things I love most about working with babies is that they each have their own personality. Some babies dive straight into the cake without hesitation. Others take their time and carefully investigate every detail. Some are fascinated by the balloons. Some are more interested in the decorations than the cake itself. And yes, some babies cry. A cake smash session is often filled with new sights, sounds, textures, and experiences. For a one-year-old, that can be a lot to take in. Their reaction is never wrong. It's simply who they are in that moment.

A Successful Session Doesn't Require Perfect Smiles

One of the most common concerns parents have is: "What happens if my baby cries?" The answer is simple. We work with it.

As photographers, we cannot force a baby to smile. We cannot ask them to perform and we certainly cannot predict exactly how they will react. What we can do is embrace the moment and create something beautiful from it. Some of the most memorable photographs I've captured weren't the ones where the baby was smiling. They were the images that captured genuine emotion, curiosity, surprise, determination, and even a few tears. Because those moments are real.

Sometimes the Best Memories Belong to the Parents

Some of my favorite cake smash sessions have involved babies who weren't quite sure what they thought about their birthday cake. There were tears. There were serious expressions. There was definitely no interest in smashing the cake.

But something magical happened. The best cake smash photos aren't always the smiling ones. Sometimes they're the real ones.

Mom and Dad started laughing, enjoying the moment, and even sneaking a few bites of cake themselves. The photographs captured not only their baby's personality but also the joy, humor, and love shared by the entire family. Years from now, those are the memories they'll talk about. Not whether every photograph included a perfect smile, but how their little one reacted on his very first birthday. Life is made up of moments. Sometimes things don't go exactly as planned, but with the right attitude, we can still find joy in them. When we choose to embrace the unexpected and focus on the bright side, we often discover that the most meaningful memories come from the moments we never planned for.

Real Memories Are Better Than Perfect Memories

Social media often shows only the perfectly posed moments. The reality is that childhood is beautifully unpredictable. Babies cry. Babies laugh. Babies make messes. Babies surprise us. And those unexpected moments often become the stories families cherish most. When you look back at your photographs years from now, I want you to remember exactly who your child was at this stage of life. Their personality. Their expressions. Their reactions. Their unique little quirks. Those are the details that make memories meaningful.

Celebrating Your Baby, Exactly As They Are

Real memories aren't created because everything went according to plan. They're created in the unexpected moments, the curious expressions, the serious faces, the tiny surprises, and the laughter shared along the way. Those are often the moments families treasure most.

Because one day the cake will be gone, the decorations will be packed away, and your baby will have grown. But these photographs will always bring you back to this beautiful moment in time.
